Transcript: The Splendid Song Sale Story Act 1: Scene 1 The Approach Customer (Annie) enters bcyThemes store. As she enters she is jamming (dancing, head bumping, silent singing) to her iPod. She stops to look at a chart that includes the packages offered by bcyThemes. Across the store, the sales consultant (Tory) sits at a desk. Upon seeing Annie enter the store, Tory gets up to make her way towards her. Tory: (smiling) Hello Annie: (taking out her headphones) Hi Tory: That must be an awesome song. What are you listening to? Annie: ‘Born This Way’ by Lady Gaga. Tory: Always a good choice. Do you listen to it a lot? Annie: Yeah I like it a lot. Tory: What do you like most about it? Annie: I don’t know I just like the sound of it I guess. Tory: How do you feel about the words? Annie: I love them. They inspire me, ya know. It’s like this is how I am take it or leave it. There isn’t any beating around the bush. Tory: Does the music have the same affect? Annie: Yeah…(pause to think) probably. Tory: What I mean is do you like the music more than the words or vice versa? Annie: (uncertainly) That’s hard to say. I guess the words. Tory: It’s ok. It’s hard to put into words. I’m Tory, by the way. (Extends hand) (Handshake) Annie: Annie Tory: Is this song your favorite, Annie? Annie: I don’t know if it’s my favorite. I don’t really have a specific favorite, depends on my mood. Tory: Do you ever have a really hard time finding a song to fit your mood? You know the times when you hit the skip button over and over? Annie: Yes! I can just spend an hour looking for song. It drives me nuts. Tory: Wouldn’t it be awesome if together we could create a song just for those times when you can’t seem to find anything to listen to? Annie: Really? You can do that? Tory: Sure can! Here let me show you. End of Act 1 Scene 1 (Tory starts moving towards the desk. Annie follows as they continue convesation) Tory: So how many songs do you have on your iPod, Annie? (Gesturing towards chair in front of desk) Go ahead and take a seat. Tory then moves around the desk and takes a seat in the chair behind it. Annie: (sitting) Thank you. I don’t know, probably close to five hundred. Tory: Wow that’s quite a few. How do you go search for the right song for the right mood? Annie: I usually go by genre. You know if I am excited and want to dance around the room I’ll select pop? Tory: How many times do you skip songs before listening to a full one? Annie: Too many times to count for sure. Tory: Do you know why you do that? Annie: (Shrugs shoulders) None of them feel right. Tory: What do you mean? Annie: Sometimes the words don’t apply to me. The music may be awesome but when I try to sing the words it doesn’t make sense. Tory: Do you have any examples off the top of your head? Annie: Bohemian Rhapsody. It sounds so cool but what is with the words. Tory: I know they have always confused me too. If you could rewrite the words and personalize the song what would they say? Annie: Oh man. I don’t know. Tory: That’s ok. Here we’re going to try something. If you want to put these headphones on I am going to play Bohemian Rhapsody without the words. I want you to close your eye and think about what message you would place within the song. Annie: Ok (Tory plays the song) Tory: So what did you think? Annie: I think it describes hope; the music seems to be uplifting. It’s like it’s telling me that everything will be alright. Tory: That’s great. Want to know what you just did? Annie: What? Tory: Started creating your own personal song. Can you see how by personalizing the song and changing the lyrics to fit you could change your entire attitude? Annie: Yeah now I want to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody. Tory: (chuckles) That’s why we’re here. Is this a favorite song? Annie: Not really. I don’t mind listening to it every once in a while but I could live without it? Tory: Ok how about we pull out your iPod? What are the top listened to songs? Annie: How many do you want? Tory: Oh let’s look at the top three. Annie: Ok it’s Lady Gaga “Born this Way”, Adele “Someone Like You”, Sara Bareilles “Gonna Get Over You”. Tory: When do you listen to these? I know this is kind of off the wall but if you want to just think about it for a second. (pause) Annie: Uh everywhere. Tory: Ok. Do the songs remind you of anyone? Annie: Yeah…I guess they do. Tory: Did you think about him when you listened to the song earlier? Annie: Bohemian Rhapsody. Not really but I can see how it would relate. Tory: What is your relationship like? Annie: There is no relationship; it’s more of a friendship that gets complicated. Tory: After you hang out with him do you find yourself listening to these songs? Annie: I guess I do, yeah. They seem to help cheer me up. Tory: Which one and how does it cheer you up? Annie: (Pausing to consider) Adele’s “Someone Like You.” I don’t know it shows a sense of sorrow ya know? There is an emptiness that she feels and she expresses it so well. I can just relate to it. Tory: What
